Lots of good press for a deserving Lady Buffs basketball team

A large and enthusiastic crowd turned out for the semi-final game in Richmond. A larger one is expected for the final.

Locally, we’re used to seeing good media coverage of the winning exploits of the Lady Buffs basketball team of Floyd County High School but with the team’s latest appearance in the final four of the Virginia State Championships in Richmond, the press coverage is expanding.

Declared the Washington Post after the team won the semi-final match in Richmond Friday: “George Mason buckles under Floyd County’s pressure in Virginia A Division 2 semifinal loss.”

Said the Richmond Times-Disptach: “Carley Lytton scored 23 points and Amanda Hollandsworth scored 16 points and had four steals as Floyd County beat George Mason.”

Writes Robert Anderson of The Roanoke Times:

Virginia’s capital city has been a party town in recent years for George Mason’s girls basketball team.

Friday, it was a Floyd fest.

Defending Group A Division 2 champion George Mason came to VCU’s Siegel Center looking for a possible third state title in four years, but it was Floyd County that left with a 78-67 semifinal victory over the Mustangs.

The Times also has 14 photos by friend and paper photographer Matt Gentry.

The Floyd Press is also keeping readers up to date on the tournament online. The paper will have full coverage with my photos and Roger Mannon’s story in next week’s edition.
