Closures limit choices for Blue Ridge Parkway usage

Mabry Mill: Still open and still popular.

A lot of things are closed on the Blue Ridge Parkway this year, some because of the economy and some more because of the federal government “sequestration.”

Mabry Mill, the most photographed location on the Parkway, is still open and Peaks of Otter managed to reopen recently but Doughton Park could not find a vendor to run the lodge or coffee shop and the gates are closed because the Parkway does not have funds for maintenance.

In Floyd County, Smartview picnic area is closed.  So is the Rocky Knob visitor center. North of the county, Roanoke Mountain‘s campground is closed.  Otter Creek closed last year and is still shut down.

Some of the Parkway staff tell me privately that some areas may never reopen because even if sequestration ends staff cuts within the National Park Service may remain.
