Floyd County High School basketball star Caleb Tanner made history before home fans Thursday night by breaking the Virginia High School League career scoring record late in the first quarter as the Buffaloes beat the Giles Spartans 81-62 before a packed house that included the previous holder of the scoring title.
Stacy Erwin, who set the previous record in 1997 in Scott County, drove up from Bristol to see his mark broken and to join Tanner in mid-court to congratulate him.
Tanner needed 11 points to break the record. He reached that mark with 37.4 seconds left in the first quarter and then finished the night with 36 points to now head into the conference final at Floyd tonight with 2,713 career points and counting.
Friday night’s conference final at the FCHS gym is an all Floyd and Martinsville event with both the Buffaloe and Lady Buffs face off against the Henry County school.
Win or lose, both Floyd teams secured a spot in the regional playoffs that begin next week.
