The legendary career of Floyd County High School basketball coach Alan Cantrell ended with a stunning loss to Glenvar — a team his Lady Buffaloes beat handily twice in the regular season — 46-40 Friday night in the Region C Division 2 semifinals at Northwood High School in Saltville Friday night.
The Lady Buffs scored only one field goal from the floor in the 4th quarter and ended hopes for a return to the state finals in Richmond for a fifth straight year.
The loss brought Cantrell’s career to a close. The coach with the best record in Floyd County High School history announced his retirement earlier in the season.
“It really hasn’t started to sink in yet,” Cantrell told The Roanoke Times after the loss Friday night.
The Lady Buffs, ranked 5th in the commonwealth, went into the regional tourney as the top seed even though they lost to Radford in overtime in the Three Rivers District tournament final last week.
Most expected Floyd and Radford to meet again the regional final Monday but night but Chilhowie ended Radford’s run with a 47-42 win.
The abrupt end to the title run this year, however, does not diminish Cantrell’s incredible record as coach or the excellent effort by his team in what many felt would be a rebuilding year.
It remains a great year.
