The Lady Buffaloes basketball team of Floyd County High School saw their bid for another 2A state championship fall one game short Saturday night with a 60-43 semifinal loss to Central-Wise at James Madison University in Harrisonburg.
The Warriors of Central-Wise, a perennial opponent that has beaten the Lady Buffaloes and lost to them in past playoffs, took the early lead 8 – 2 after an early tie and never looked back.
Elizabeth Quesenberry scored 13, including two three-pointers, to lead scoring for the Lady Buffs, followed by Abi Behshan with 11 and Michaela Thompson at 8 but the Warriors shot 77.8 percent from the floor and overcame Floyd’s trademark press defense.
The loss, however, came in a season when the Lady Buffs lost five of their first seven games and fought back to take both the Conference and Regional playoff championships to reach the final four of the state tournament.
“I’m proud of how the girls competed all year,” assistant coach Travis Cantrell told The Roanoke Times after the game. “We have a bright future.”
Central-Wise squares off for the state title match at the Siegel Center in Richmond with the Martinsville Bulldogs, which Floyd beat twice in the playoffs.
