The Floyd County High School varsity golf team takes on Patrick County in a scrimmage match at 2 p.m. today at Great Oaks Country Club.
Varsity footballers line up against Cave Spring Friday at home in another scrimmage.
And classes start Thursday, April 9.
Seem a bit early? Yep. There was a time, not that long ago, when public schools began a school year after Labor Day.
“August is the new September,” is the operating statement in public schools nowadays.
School starts earlier and earlier each year, in part to bank “snow days” where school might be closed and, also, to make sure the schools get in all the “standards” tests now required by the state and feds.
Some other school systems in Virginia started last week.
Since August is often the month when many families often schedule vacations, a start of school on August 9 causes some problems on planning. The oppressive heat of August is also an issue in schools where classrooms are not air conditioned.
Classes started in August in Floyd County last year but some days were cut short because of heat and humidity.
Welcome to the new normal.
