Icy limbs bring down county power lines

Appalachian Power nearly 8,000 customers without power before noon Thursday as ice-laden tree branches and complete trees cascaded to the ground, taking power line out and blocking some roads.

A fallen tree at State Line Road and U.S. 221 just south to the Floyd-Roanoke County line apparently triggered the start of outages that doubled and then increased ten-fold through the morning hours.

Freezing rain and sleet continued to fall, along with some reports of snow, as the county headed into the afternoon.

Heaviest outages concentrated in the Willis-Indian Valley areas but outages totaling 1,000 or more appeared throughout the county on an APCO map on the utility’s website.
