Floyd County High School’s Lady Buffaloes fought tough, determined Giles County Lady Spartans in a quarterfinal basketball match Thursday night but came away with a 55-50 win reach semi-finals at Salem High School on Saturday.
The Lady Buffs led by nine points — 43-34 — after three quarters but that was a comeback from a two-point deficit — 25-27 — the team faced at halftime after losing an eight-point lead halfway through the second quarter.
In the third quarter, however, Alexis Kiser hit a three pointer, which put the Buffaloes back into a lead they never lost. The Lady Buffaloes added nine points with just one from Giles to go into the fourth quarter with the nine-point lead.
Giles closed that gap by scoring five unanswered points at the beginning of the final quarter and trailed only four points . Kiser fouled out with a little over six-and-a-half minutes remaining.
Then Amy Whitlow joined Kiser on the bench after fouling out later in the game but the pair had 14 points each while the remaining Lady Buffs tightened up the defense and held on for the five point win.
The Lady Buffaloes will face Gretna in the semi-finals at Salem High School Saturday at 4:30 p.m. The winner of that game qualifies for a Class 2 state tournament berth.
