With 5:50 left of the game clock Friday night at Floyd County High School, Matt Cockram of the Buffaloes returned a fumble 95 yards for a touchdown that sealed a 13-6 victory over the Fort Chiswell Pioneers.
The Pioneers took the lead in the first quarter with a one-yard run by Dylan Bailey of the Pioneers, but the Buffaloes blocked the point-after attempt and when Tyler Fenton gave the Buffaloes (2-2) a 7-6 lead with a TD run in the second quarter, the successful extra point gave the home team the lead that they held for the rest of the same
Fort Chiswell drove inside the Floyd County 3-yard line four times in the second half but came away empty each time, once when the Buffaloe intercepted a pass in the end zone.
Braden Chaffin of the Buffs ran for 110 yards.
Floyd’s record is now 2-2 and is back on the road next week against Carroll County.
The win Friday night came during the homecoming game.
Dylan Bailey ran for a TD in the first quarter for Fort Chiswell (1-3), but the Pioneers could not put any more points on the board despite four second-half drives inside the Floyd County 30-yard line.
Fort Chiswell could have taken the lead with a touchdown in the second quarter, but a holding call brought it back.
Penalties also put the Buffaloes out of contention more than once in the game.
Jonathan Poole ran for 186 yards for Fort Chiswell.
