On Nov. 9, 2012, I was riding my 2009 Harley-Davidson Super Glide Motorcycle on U.S. 221 near the bottom of Mountain while returning from photographing a Floyd County High School football playoff game just outside of Staunton when a black steer crossed the road in front of me.

I laid the bike down to try and avoid t-boning the cow. The crash put me in Roanoke Memorial Carillon Hospital in critical condition. I did not gain consciousness until Dec. 5th and was able to return home on Christmas Eve.

During my time in the hospital, visitors who came to see me or kept in touch with Amy included area musicians, including Bernie Coveney, Andrea Marshall, Kari and Michael Kovic, Mac and Jenny Traynham, Clyde Williams, Scott Perry and others. I missed too many of their visits because I was not conscious. I learned later that prayers were offered in churches and the Friday Night Jamboree.

The Kovics and their band, Windfall, dedicated a song to me on stage after I returned to Floyd. It was a special night I remember with tears in my eyes. The song was “The Lucky One” and I was shooting video of the show.

I tried to thank them as best I could with the video above. I love the music culture of our County and the area, even though I am tone death and have no talent to even sing a note. Thanks to all of you.
