For the first time in more than two years, I am heading out with one of my video cameras to film a concert by Windfall at Oak Grove Pavilion behind Zion Lutheran Church at 365 Needmore LN, NE in Floyd. As they so often do, the group is raising money for needy charities. Admission is free but the hat is passed to raise the funds.
The group was called Brother Wind were performing at a Spring Into Summer event on the front lawn of the county courthouse when shortly after wife Amy and I moved to Floyd in 2004. The band’s name was changed after Kari Kovic joined her husband, Mike, Dave Fason and Rusty May and it became Windfall.
I had photographed and filmed the group several times over the year and one concert a little more than a decade ago brought tears to my eyes when they dedicated their rendition of “The Lucky One ” to me after I survived a motorcycle accident that should have killed me on U.S. 221 near the bottom of Bent Mountain while coming home from shooting a football tournament game near Staunton. Many musicians offered prayers, some came to the hospital and performed and I was told the Friday Nite Jamboree opened their show with a prayer for my recovery.
I was touched by their prayers and hope to return to shoot more more photos and videos on the area’s music culture. I owe the musicians and others a lot.

You are the lucky one, Doug, but so are we that your persistence and determination keep you coming back to life. You must have a will of steel, and a zest for the good times, so may they they roll for many years to come! We skipped the song this concert in favor of some new material, but we’ll likely do it September 26 at Villa Appalachia, if you are able to make it.
