Floyd County High School’s Lady Buffaloes softball pitcher Olivia Yates struck out the final two batters from the Appomattox Raiders in the bottom of the seventh an final inning Thursday afternoon to keep a one-run lead and semi-final win that puts the team into the state championship tournament.
Yates struck out seven and also hit a solo home run that tied the game in the top of the fourth inning as her pitching and strong defensive play by the Lady Buffs held the Raiders to that single run.
In the top of the fifth, pitcher Carly Quesinberry dropped a single into center field that brought Morgan Harris in to score the winning run.
Appomattox stranded seven runners on base and Yates and the Lady Buffs worked through the threats with strikeouts and strong defensive play.
The Lady Buffs next play Dan River, again at the Botetourt Sports Complex north of Roanoke but their regional semi-final win gives them a berth in the state playoffs.
